Registration officials need to check the criminal history files.

Another good check would be to run the registration process against the INS records and even Social Security records. This is to find and eliminate non-citizens from federal elections. Some municipalities allow non-citizens to vote in the local elections, but the distinction should be made that these people should not vote in the federal elections.
