"How can you even begin to make such a statement based only on what is happening in these few heavily Democratic counties?"

You compare votes in a Republican area with invalidated ballots in large population, predominantly Democratic areas. Because the probability of accepting previously invalid ballots is likely to produce more votes for Gore than the current margin of 930 in favor of Bush, that alone justifies a continued manual recount (and also justifies recounting in Republican areas). The Florida Supreme Court cannot allow a scenario to take place in which legitimate ballots remain uncounted. This would be unconstitutional. The Republican answer is that nothing is wrong with the machines, only with the voters, so tough luck. Judging from the questioning yesterday, I don't think the Florida Supreme Court is buying that argument.
