There is of course another way of looking at it.

If the Government monopolized and controlled phone system and companies did not exist, private enterprise would have dropped analog like a hot 'potatoe' for data transmission;

free competition would have established digital transmission 10+ years earlier;

and that Gore viewed Government control of the internet as a key to the maintenance of political stability.

In that sense, he did "invent" the internet, don't ya think? :)))

What you call a horrible example of group think is simply an opinion on your part.
Without knowing anything about me, where I work, or what I do, I get the feeling you think I'm unaware of the history of the internet, its funding, its founders, and what it has accomplished. Just as you assume the same for everyone involved in this "group think".

Gore's statement is patently false, inasmuch as it is a gross exaggeration.
All the other history you list is accurate, but says little about what may or may not have happened without the government. It is simply history, nothing more. You have your view of it, I have mine.
