WAFL and other innovations are protected by patents. Do NOT underestimate the cultural problems that EMC is facing with this new mid-tier product. I don't want to go into this too much, as Christensen said it best in "The Innovators Dilemma". Strongly recommended reading. In a nutshell, the only way to fight off a disruptive innovation is to form a separate company that can run will the ball. That's what IBM did with the PC against Apple, but then IBM brought their PC business back into their company and look what happened. Remember Microchannel and OS/2?
