At first thought, I kind of like the Maine methodology also. Though I'm not sure who would have been the winner if that were used nationwide. The county by county map while very interesting is also very misleading in claiming to find a mandate. It's citizens that vote, not counties or square miles. American population is not spread out very evenly - the Boswash area has about 25% of the nation's population, California has another 10% - most which is spread along the coast. That's 35% of the population along two stretches of coastline. I've read that a majority of the country lives in a county that borders an ocean.
