OT - NM Election Results

Scumbria...You are incorrect about the 350 hand-counted ballots putting Bush up by themselves. You comment seemed to indicate that the 350 ballots were all for Bush. If I recall correctly, about 350 damaged early or absentee ballots that couldn't be read by the machine were initially set aside, then the decision was made to count them. These ballots contained some votes for Bush, some for Gore. These results were added to the total of the machine counts and absentee ballots, including a precinct's worth of electronic votes found in a box within the vote warehouse, but never counted. When all of these were totaled, some votes for Bush, some for Gore, then the statewide tally changed to show Bush up by about 100 votes (Gore won Bernalillo County by about 2400 votes). At that point the tally sheet discrepancy was found in Dona Ana County, which put Gore up on top by about 400 votes. This is the total likely to be certified by the state. I'd be interested to know how many ineligibles voted in NM, and I'd be interested to know how many requested absentee ballots but didn't get them, at least a few hundred reported in the papers, but to date I haven't seen anyone pushing to get those numbers. Since the issue is fairness, ensuring that every vote properly cast is counted and every vote improperly cast is disallowed, and since this is critical to the legitimacy of the next President, I'd like to see all ballots in every state recounted and cross-checked. I'd be willing to bet that the number of fraudulent votes in certain parts of the country would change the totals considerably, and perhaps change the electoral college outcome in a couple of states where the races were close. It's unfortunate that neither candidate has taken this stance, as I think it would prove to be a popular posture going forward. jbk
