PC Shipments in Asia-Pacific Rise Sharply in 3Q, Dataquest Says

PC Shipments in Asia-Pacific Rise Sharply in 3Q, Dataquest Says

November 20, 2000 (TOKYO) -- PC shipments in the Asia-Pacific region, excluding
Japan, increased sharply, registering 4.6 million units in the third quarter of 2000, a gain
of 34 percent from a year earlier.

Dataquest Inc. released the third-quarter PC shipment survey results for the
Asia-Pacific region on Nov. 8. Dataquest is a unit of Gartner Group Inc., a market
research company. The PC market of the Asia-Pacific region expanded substantially
thanks to introduction of IT technology by government organizations, private
companies and the spread of the use of the Internet in many countries.

Legend Computer, a Chinese PC firm, topped other makers for the second straight
quarter, at with 11 percent market share, followed by IBM Corp. at 8 percent and
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. of Korea at 7 percent. The three companies increased
their shipments significantly due mainly to rising demand for PCs in China and Korea.

By region, China had the largest market share at 39 percent of total shipments, as
demand in China remained firm, soaring 14 percent over the second quarter. Korea
ranked second at 18 percent, for an increase of 125 percent over the same period last
year.

The introduction of the goods and service tax (GST) in Australia dampened purchases
there and the depreciating Australian dollar had an adverse impact on shipments,
resulting in an increase of just 11 percent.

Shipments surged to some Asia-Pacific countries, such as India, Malaysia, Thailand
and Indonesia, where the spread of PCs has been low.

Shipments to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand, where PCs are widely
used, also increased. And demand in the Philippines and Vietnam is expected to grow in
the future.

The following is a chart of rankings on market share by maker and their ratio of increase.
