I think security is a consideration no matter what computing environment you are using, from the smallest net attached device, to big corporation, the hacks are out to cause havoc. I don't know how long you have been around, but I used to program on teletype machines before that punch cards. I hack could access the teletype local electronics and then break into the system that way. So it's not a matter of where the device is attached, it's matter that it's is attached. No mater if it's local network, or stand alone, a virus can come into to any device, even by sneaker net.
