You may be referring to the kernel common to MS products which may be subject to security break-ins and viral infection. I'm not a software propeller-head so I can't speak authoritatively either. MS does seem somewhat prone to this kind of thing. Popularity may be the main reason though. AOL mail also served as a vector once or twice hasn't it?

There's nothing "wrong" with AOL. There's nothing wrong with mediocrity. The odd thing is why are so many so willing to spend $20/month for it? Personally, I dislike the interface. When I had the service about five years ago I wanted to just ignore the AOL software and use it stictly as an ISP with Netscape but it was nearly impossible as I remember. Now I don't pay for an ISP. There are perfectly fine free services so why pay? Plus AOL's marketing is kind of irritating. CD packages everywhere you turn. Brilliant, I guess, but irritating. Sign up, it's so easy. Sign off, not so easy.
