that crazy doug...

Assuming a 1.4 gig P4 "all-in system" costs the same as the 1.2 gig Athy (a short term anomaly, imho), the question then begs: why does the 1.4 gig not perform as well as the 1.2 gig right across the board when it is supposedly 200 Mhz faster??? I'd be suspicious of the microprocessor "quality" issue here, especially if I was aware of the 40 errata in the P4!!!

There is a difference between ads and actually having product to sell. I believe you will see a real 1.2 Athlon with DDR next to a sign saying 1.5GHZ P4 Intel. I believe Intel hopes the sign will keep consumers waiting to buy. It is easy to give away your chips when you don't really have any to give away.

"Too bad on gateway's site a p4 1.4 ghz is about the same price as a 1.2 ghz athlon with ddr. If that trend holds all over and isn't just a short time special deal then when you see a 1.4 ghz next to a 1.2 in the store and they are the same price, but the 1.4 says intel on it.. Go ahead and take a stab at the logical conclusion most people will leap to."

Doug,

Too bad on gateway's site a p4 1.4 ghz is about the same price as a 1.2 ghz athlon with ddr.

I was talking about top of the line 1.5 GHz P4. A stripped down 1.4 GHz P4 does come with a price only a slightly higher, but if 1.5 GHz P4 can't outperform 1.2 GHz Athlon, 1.4 GHz P4 is not going to do it either.

But I am sure many people don't know this and will go with MHz. (Low quality MHz TM Dan)

Without any marketing support from AMD, anyone here who thinks someone will go for the 1.2 has borrowed some rose colored glasses from Jerry.
