Your point makes even the "educated" democrat look bad. Welfare and government housing, in the long run, is very damaging to the people it is designed to help. When you are constantly given things, you develop a low self-esteem. You also do not take care of what you have, as you would if you worked for it. Neighborhoods become run down, and that breeds the criminal element. Drug dealers, crack houses, etc... People who work hard for what they have, know very well the "one broke window theory." That is, when one neighbor is allowed to get by with not fixing a broke window, then pretty soon, someone else will let something run down. The end result is a run down neighborhood. These people develop home owners associations. People are expected to maintain the appearance of their homes, and this protects everyone's investment. But when you are given a home, so to speak, and you are surrounded by run down homes, and you have low self-esteem, you'll sink to their level. One generation produces another generation. Low self-esteem produces a lack to better yourself, in education, job, and in life. Even the public school system is teaching a "feel good attitude" and "self-esteem" these days, to break a cycle. The problem here, proper educational material suffers while "feel good" material is taught. This also applies to the upper level of income families. You take the very wealthy, who gives their kids what they want. The end results can be just as damaging for the child when he grows up.
