No one is suggesting that Hawking is dumb because he got poor grades in college (which I don't believe, incidentally).

Please let me clarify myself before this goes too far. I have never suggested that Dr. Hawking was ever anything but brilliant. I do not know, but would guess that he made straight A's. However, I do know through his own writings that he never applied that brilliant mind of his until he found out he had Lou Gehrig's disease. I think that he tells people this in hopes that they wouldn't waste their lives away like he did. He regrets that he didn't apply himself sooner. Otherwise he could very well accomplish alot more with his life than he has. He admits that he goofed off terribly in college. He never applied himself or tried in college. He would just show up to class to take tests.
Now the comparison made is that people looking on to someone can't tell how smart they are because of how they act, in college, or anywhere. It is only when a person accepts a challenge, and applies themeselves, do they truly show themselves.
