<<<(1) The Bush forces had an unimpeded opportunity to request whatever recounts they wanted by the 72-hour
deadline Friday night after the election, but they didn't -- undoubtedly they made the tactical decision that
Friday that they'd rather bash at the Gore recount efforts than have ballots recounted in whatever counties
might be more favorable to Bush. Shouldn't they be expected to live with their tactical decisions like most
adults have to? My sense is that the adults on the Florida Supreme Court take about this attitude to the
"selective recount" argument.>>>>
Well Mr Bush may be different but hes not stupid. He had won the State and the election- verified by the Florida authority.
The game was over and the team won, would you listen to a player who says " Aw, Gee, coach, can't we ask for one overtime so we can score sum more points?"

Is there any principled argument as to why these aren't complete answers?

I think you have it covered.

Well, no, it is not exaggerated, it was reported by Harris Interactive on C-SPAN 1 yesterday- the most accurate pollsters in this election. I paraphrase, the guy from Harris said "when asked if the four counties should be included alone, 94% said no." Nothing is illogical in this. Recovering votes from only one candidates territory is simply unfair, and a process that would allow such was never intended by anyone.

Re: "Gore got recounts in those four counties by making a timely request for such a recount, as the Republicans had the right to do as well."

Quite. However, the fundamental unfairness of the introduction of a "county grubbing" process, at the whim of various county canvassing commissions, has no place in our elections. One commission might be Democratic, while the voters went Republican- but it would be their choice whether to accept a candidates request for this hand-counting vote recovery method.

The problem is in the nature of the punched ballots, and the votes they commonly miss wherever used. ALL counties have to be included in what is essentially, it turns out, a vote recovery method, to be fair.

This fundamental fairness will be upheld. No brainer.

Well, you have to remember that any benefit to Bush or Gore are secondary benefits. As Gore stated: It was only about the desire to have all voters reach the certainty of having their votes counted. Why use the word "ALL" if you only mean "Democrat"? Who cares what Bush had the right to do for his benefit. Gore says the game is being played for the sake of the precious voter...ALL of them. And Gore would never lie or mislead, and that's a FACT.

"pretty routine, and more accurate, at least when conducted in public as is being done under Florida law"

You must be kidding! routine? accurate?
I've worked with punched cards for years. Nothing could be further from the truth.
in public? they won't even allow reporters in when they work on the disputed ones.

The Bush forces had an unimpeded opportunity to request whatever recounts they wanted by the 72-hour deadline

RCMac.... Bush didn't ask for recounts because he didn't want to prolong the issue and the two electronic recounts of Palm Beach did not alter the results.

HOWEVER, that said, they ALSO were operating under the presumption of a CLEAR set of standards being followed, not the mid-course alteration of standards that the various canvassing boards have implemented in determining "voter intent" rather than just recounting those votes that were valid by way of not being controversial.

I'm sure had they known that hanging chads, dimples, etc. were gonna be counted, they would have asked for recounts in ALL their predominantly republican counties.

Again, the key factor is that the Gore campaign has pushed to CHANGE THE STANDARDS FOR COUNTING A VOTE AS VALID when electronic recounts failed to net them the necessary votes they required.

Make sure you tell the whole story when using that argument.
