Here goes: "Over the years, more African-Americans have risen from lower class to middle class. I think we can both agree on that fact." I don't know if that is fact or not, but I hope it is, and I think that is great. "The question is why (93% of blacks for Gore)? You tell me. As more people realize the American dream, shouldn't that help the Republicans and lead to the election of more conservatives?" I believe it should lead to at least a more balanced percentage of blacks voting republican, but the reason it does not (imo) is that people like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the democratic party cater to the "victim" message that says you are in this position because you have been cheated. This preserves their positions of power at the expense of the population they claim to be helping. It is a vicious circle that will keep blacks oppressed until a higher percentage of them comes forward with a message that you CAN succeed, and that succeeding does not make you a bad person. Another example similar to yours is that more black people think OJ was innocent. Does that make OJ innocent, or does it illustrate the deep distrust of the "white" establishment. I believe the latter, and I think there are many, many people that will feed into it because it gives them the power and wealth that they are casting as evil. I appreciate your position that it is all about analysis of the issues, but if it was, the black vote would be closer to the 50%-50% split amongst the general population. Sorry about the lengthy answer to your second question, but that is at the heart of the issue, imo. Your position seems to be "x% of people do this, therefore that must mean y". My position is x% of people do this, what is causing this disparity with the general population? If we can get some serious thought as a nation into that aspect of the different viewpoints we can tackle the disparities and empower people to achieve higher goals.
