How much worse could it have been? Losing in ALL benchmarks against Athlon (compared to 90% now)? Underperforming a 1 GHz Pentium 3? >>

Sorry, my verbage there was very confusing. I meant the release of the p4 wasn't as bad as it could have been to AMD. (meaning it won't effect us in nearly as big away as it could have because the performance isn't that great).

Andreas, I agree, but another bigee to me is that Intel again went off trying to get those elusive big time returns on the internet; by designing a chip for the internet; rather than a chip which would do well in the commercial space. I doubt if IT managers worry about mhz as much as performance; smp and good workstation performance in most apps.. They aren't that stupid. Without any other chip coming in the future, except a die shrink; where will they get the performance they need in the workstation, desktop and small server market. It seems incredible that Intel didn't protect its base with a chip designed for commercial needs, and then go after another niche with the P4. If SMP comes out, and Palomino performs well, this could be the break AMD needs to break the commercial market. Also, with Hammer projected at 3X 1ghz t-bird, P4 will have to do 4.5 ghz by 1q-02 just to keep up.
