In my opinion the initial reaction to portal Yahoo and likes was due to hyped up potential of business. Advertisers wanted of course to sell wares but the profits weren't coming in from net advertising as they are from TV.
Athm was future, interactive, fast transfer of information but the results of that fast transfer aren't appearing on bottom lines.

To the consumer shipping posed problems it so much easier to go the mall buy what you want. If it doesn't work take it back and buy something else that day. Net shopping does not offer this ease of buy and return.

The other issue that is troubling me is Yahoo separate from ATHM is one great news source but the brokerage house are doing this also. The net is not the fore runner of anything for most. Athm was suppose to be a money maker much of that money would be derived from heavy use of the net.

Value of the net period is the question in my mind. How much public commerce use? How much will it cost before it reaches profit stage? Will it be profitable at all or just end up an appendix of that which is popular in the non net world.

Holiday Season will tell it all this year.
