Metricom Continues to Expand Its Ricochet 128 kbps Service in New York
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov 21, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- As part of its ongoing efforts to expand Ricochet coverage, Metricom (Nasdaq: MCOM chart, msgs) brought online five additional key Wired Access Points (WAPs) in the following areas: New York City, Suffolk County (Long Island), NY, and Westchester County, NY. Major locations now receiving Ricochet coverage include:

-- Bronx, Botanical Gardens
-- Manhattan, Upper East Side/Museum Row
-- Queens, Astoria

The West Babylon and White Plains WAPs represent Metricom's first network penetration in the Suffolk County and Westchester County areas, with service soon to come. To date, the Ricochet 128 kbps network now covers a population totaling more than seven million in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area.

The Ricochet network consists of radio transceivers (Microcell Radios) mounted to streetlights or utility poles, and Wired Access Points (WAPs), which collect and convert the radio frequency (RF) packets for transmission to the wired Internet Protocol (IP) network backbone. The small radio transceivers are integral to the Ricochet network, allowing users to send and receive data from Ricochet wireless modems anywhere in a coverage area.
