Florida Supreme Court nears US election decision

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov 21 (Reuters) - The Florida Supreme
Court will make a "very important" announcement on the U.S.
presidential election within 30 minutes, a court official said
on Tuesday, without indicating its exact nature.
"The court will make a very important announcement in 30
minutes," Marshal Wilson Barnes told reporters.
The court is considering whether to allow the state to
accept hand recounted ballots in the presidential contest, a
potentially decisive ruling that could determine whether
Democratic Vice President Al Gore or Republican Texas Gov.
George W. Bush won the Nov. 7 election.
Gore needs 931 more votes to move ahead of Bush in Florida
and three largely Democratic counties are still hand recounting
votes. Unofficial results from the hand recounts have so far
yielded fewer votes for Gore than his campaign had predicted on
the basis of sample recounts last week.
With Florida and its 25 Electoral College votes the prize
that will determine which man wins the White House, both
parties filed still more lawsuits on Tuesday over what
standards to use in deciding whether to count or disqualify
punch card ballots.
