In theory, speaking purely legally, the resolution of the election could take years. But this is speaking in a vacuum. It is too early to tell whether there are disputed facts sufficient to keep the parties litigating until the bitter end. And then there is the political issue, of when the respective parties just give up and give in.

I would be very surprised if the issues were not resolved in time for the Florida Electors to vote on December 18. But if not, hunker down. It could go on indefinitely.

The problem with that scenario is that all the bodies which can decide the contest other than the Florida courts are majority Republican - the Florida legislature, the United States Congress, the United States Supreme Court. So Gore must win on the facts, he has no hope of having the law construed in his favor.
