I have never met a Lawyer yet that doesn't think the system is just hunky dory.
First think I would go after is Tort reform. I also think to a large extent, people should be responsible
for their actions. Why are there more Lawyers in Georgia than all of Japan? Why do we have 70% of the worlds Lawyers? Why do Lawyers cost our GDP over 10% a year. How many industries in this country have been ruined by excessive litigation and rewards? Why have Lawyers been universally despised since the days of socrates? Why is the stock market in the tank?

Jim-

You haven't met many lawyers if you have not met any that don't think the system is "hunky dory." There is probably way over 50% of them that think the system sucks in many ways.
There is a contradiction in your Tort/reform/personal responsibility argument so huge and obvious that I am not even going to address it.
We have lots of lawyers, because lots of people like to use them.
We have 70% of the world's lawyers, use 70% of the world's energy and have a caloric intake twice as high as any other country. We have a huge percentage of the world's automobiles, television sets and telephones. We spend more on our military than the rest of the world combined. Not to mention computers, airplanes and almost anything else you care to mention. Why should the number of lawyers be any different?
What do you mean by "Lawyers cost our GDP over 10% a year?" If you are asserting that lawyers put that much in their own pockets every year, you are just wrong. If you are including other spin-offs of the legal system, you should let us know. For instance, does it include the cost to industry of compliance with clean air/water standards?
Lawyers have not been "universally despised" since the time of Socrates. They have been disliked by people looking for scapegoats for society's ills who lack any understanding of the kind of work being done by the vast majority of our lawyers. Chasing down deadbeat parents, trying to save drivers licenses, helping women get a fair share of marital property in their divorces, etc. etc. If they are "universally despised" why does society tolerate and support so many of them?
Finally, if I knew why the stock market tanks periodically, I would be a lot richer than I am.

Frank

Jim,

Why do Lawyers cost our GDP over 10% a year. How many industries in this country have been ruined by excessive litigation and rewards?

I can definitely believe the 10% figure. Businesses are forced to divert resources from productive use to defense against potential law suits.

The problem is that people don't get the connection that giving the right to sue to themselves costs them dearly. The biggest joke is the "Patient Bill of Rights". It's a lawyer bonanza under a clever name. It makes people think they are gaining something, where in fact they are signing up for lawyer tax increase.
