Hyundai Electronics to Separate Telecom Unit

November 22, 2000 (SEOUL) -- Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. said it would spin off its telecommunications unit as an independent company and focus on its semiconductor and LCD business units.

"Although Hyundai Merchant Marine and Hyundai Heavy Industries hold 20 percent equity, we are practically independent from the parent Hyundai Group," said a Hyundai Electronics official. "Our separating the telecom unit is a part of our self-rescue plan that we are reinforcing as a means of survival as an independent company."

Hyundai Electronics has appointed Saloman Smith Barney as its lead manager and is pushing to get foreign investors including New Bridge Capital to assist it. The company may hand over a portion of its business units to overseas firms.
