I seem to remember it was a reporting error by CNBC (regarding the then darling subject of wirelessness) that started the feeding frenzy. I think it would have been hard for one person to have moved the stock so thoroughly.

Also, there was a large gap up that morning, so many shorts were simply trapped and had no choice but to to ride it out, particularly those who were over allocated. Had it been slower there would have been a genuine squeeze. The bottle rocket had already fizzled by the time the margin calls came the following trading day.

The most scandalous thing about the whole affair was how some brokers bought in their short clients at the high without warning that Friday (even those who had the resources to have covered) citing the fine print that allows them to do so. Really a bad scene and many were seriously hurt.

Thanks for the blast from the past! Perhaps the best lesson on the benefits of proper allocation ever. Those with powder still dry in the 40s and 50s simply made a killing....
