Meridian, TeleHealth join to launch physicians' Web service in Africa, Asia

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Two US firms entered into a joint venture on Friday that seeks to Web-enable and link doctors, hospitals and clinics throughout Asia and Africa. The first phase is slated to begin within a month in Saudi Arabia, where one of the partners anticipates $50 million in revenue next year.
"We're presenting a [Web-based] solution to the under-served and unserved parts of the world that does not require a large initial investment," Dr. Anthony C. Dike, CEO of Los Angeles-based Meridian Holdings Inc., said. "We're starting with 36 hospitals and clinics in Saudi Arabia and we'll expand from there."
Meridian's subsidiary, CGI Communications Services, will offer its Web-enabled MedMaster applications to facilities in Saudi Arabia for a $1 million startup and installation fee each. Doctors at the facilities will then subscribe to the service for approximately $50 to $80 per month, according to Dike.
The MedMaster applications enable electronic documentation of services provided, as well as retrieval and archiving of patient records. The records are stored in a clinical data repository (CDR), which physicians can access anywhere with a computer. The CDR also can generate knowledge and artificial intelligence for future outcome studies.
Meridian's partner, TeleHealth, LLC, a Ridgefield, Connecticut-based healthcare services and consulting company, provides support to the Saudi Arabian clinics. Most already operate client/server systems, which transmit patient images to major medical centers in markets including Europe and the United States.
"After reviewing many healthcare applications, we believe the MedMaster...design allows one to implement it on both client/server and Web-enabled environment[s]," Dr. Khalid Moidu, president and CEO of TeleHealth, said, while it maintains "the highest standards of security."
Under the terms of the agreement, CGI will provide the software and technical expertise for the implementation of the MedMaster applications, while TeleHealth will provide the installation, marketing and customer support services. The two plan to sell MedMaster next year in India, Pakistan, Malaysia, South Africa, Nigeria, Singapore and Taiwan.
Dike told Reuters Health that the installation and subscription fees would vary in each country, depending on what the individual market could support. He also said that MedMaster could operate efficiently without a broadband or high-speed connection.
"We know the application can work in these countries," Dike said. "We just want to sell it once and then get the doctors on board. Then they'll stay with the system, just like AOL."
By the close of Friday trade, Meridian shares on the Over-The-Counter Bulletin Board were unchanged from the late afternoon at 0.187500.
