JC,

re: Palomino

Well the AThlon is clearly power limited right now.

SO a 25-30% improvement seems reasonable with new architecture, new transistors etc.

So a move up to 1.5-1.7Ghz seems to be feasible.

The PIV will likely run higher clock frequency.

As PIV transitions to 0.13 it should extend its lead.

The same will apply for AMD chips.

Its unclear right now who is ahead on 0.13 manufacturing between AMD and INTC.

It is likely that one will be ahead of the other.

Intel is talking early Q2 2001 for initial runs, AMD seems to be talking a few months later.

Should be pretty interesting as Hammer kicks in by end of next year.

regards,

Kash

<JC: Don't call it "legacy". Call it "mainstream". Calling it "legacy" makes it sound like it's "on the way out".>

Yes, and I believe that to be the case. x87 in performance situations will be very limited in the coming years. Sure, the change isn't going to take place quickly, so you have a good point (of course), but I really do think SIMD is the way to go (it certainly works wonders for my type of code ;)).

Most AMD diehards seem to be expecting that Pally will be a lower power, higher MHz Thunderbird. Such people will likely be surprised on the upside.

That thing better have SSE and hardware prefetching. ;p
