Dominick - to test out trading ideas, check out packages such as Metastock. These packages have specific features for testing trading ideas. You create formulas in a formula language, and can then back-test them against historical data.

Excel is a useful adjunct, though.

If you don't subscribe to Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities, do so - you will find a lot of hints on programming Metastock, TradeStation, and other similar packages. Each issue has formulas that go with some of the the articles. Good as examples, at least.

For automating tasks, there are some new and interesting options. Windows Scripting Host, available under Win2000 allows you to automate tasks by writing code in BasicScript. (Similar to Visual Basic.)

I'm not a Basic fan, though. The most intriguing possibility is Perl. ActiveState Perl (http://www.activestate.com) is now very well-integrated with Windows, and you can use it to do quite a bit of Windows automation. In particular, it can use Ole Automation, and also can be used as a Windows Scripting Host language, making it possible to script many Windows applications.
