The word in question (I am not recalling it) can bear the meaning "virgin", but need not. In a modern text, the question would be left in the air: the less specific meaning would be used in the text, with a footnote on the alternatives and the controversy. Of course, in the actual canon, the "virgin" may be imputed by the overall context.....
