Campaign finance reform is a joke. There is only one campaign finance reform that will work. The root of the problem is that corporations lobby for tax breaks. Therefore to end that lobbying there can bo only one solution. FLAT TAX.

Cheney Has Artery Stent Put In

WASHINGTON -- Doctors operated on Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney on Wednesday to insert a stent inside a heart artery that had narrowed and was causing his chest pain.

Cheney did not have a heart attack, but admitted himself to George Washington University Hospital early Wednesday with chest pains. Testing uncovered an artery that had narrowed since his last heart checkup in 1996.

A stent was inserted through a blood vessel without having to put Cheney under anesthesia and should prevent further symptoms, said Dr. Alan Wasserman, a professor of cardiology at the hospital.

Cheney had the procedure performed around 10:30 a.m. EST and was back in his hospital room resting comfortable, doctors said during a briefing.

``His prognosis is excellent at this point in time,'' Wasserman said. ``He should get back to normal functioning in a few weeks at most.''

Cheney, 59, suffered three heart attacks more than a decade ago and underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 1988 to clear clogged arteries. Doctors gave him a clean bill of health when Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush chose him as his running mate.

Cheney's medical problem threw Bush an unexpected curve in the midst of a political crisis over Florida's vote count which will decide the presidential election.

The GOP nominee went before reporters in Austin, Texas, to say that Cheney was doing fine.

``Dick Cheney is healthy. He did not have a heart attack,'' Bush said. '' He did the right thing. ... Anybody who's had heart conditions will tell you if there's any signs, any warning signs at all, it's important to have it checked out and that's what he's done.''

A stent is a scaffolding-like device that doctors thread up into an artery to hold it open so blood can flow freely. Doctors said Cheney's quick arrival at the hospital and prompt treatment prevented any heart damage.

``It is possible that had he not come in something serious could have happened,'' Wasserman said.

Wasserman said Cheney would spend two to three days recovering but should have no restrictions after he leaves.

However, stents do frequently reclog in heart disease patients, particularly those with a long history of the disease as Cheney has. Heart patients with conditions similar to the ones that Cheney has need to be monitored closely for further problems.
