Zeev,

DEXTER DOUGLASS is chairman of the Florida Constitution Revision Commission. Five of the sitting judges owe their appointment to him. It is very interesting that he stood up in the hearing, only to introduce David Boies. Perhaps he had no intention of calling in a debt, perhaps the judges are above all that petty gratitude nonsense. But why would anyone do something like this when the integrity of the nation itself is at stake?

Who knows what lurks in the hearts of men?

Here's an interesting article:

The article above is a critique on the Florida legislature and senate appointments, but the article starts with a few lines that I thought was ironic when viewed against douglass' strategic 'role' in the hearing.

Most of us understand the term "conflict of interest." It applies to someone in a position of trust or authority whose personal interests conflict with the interests of those who put him in power. Some examples are obvious....

Partisanship accusations are a slippery slope with a muddy bottom filled with unmentionables. All who peer over the edge risk falling over and being tarnished forever.

Perhaps what is saddest about all this is that this seems to be ripping apart the veneer of decency and respect and decorum between many people, and that alas is the true victim in all this. Not the political future or careers of either men.
