CNN Says Bush to Appeal to U.S. Supreme Court

November 22, 2000 3:11 pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - CNN television said on Wednesday that the Bush campaign will lodge an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a Florida high court decision allowing hand recounted votes to be included in the final tally of presidential ballots in Florida. "George W. Bush is authorizing his lawyers to file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court in an effort to shut down all hand recounts of Florida ballots," said CNN.

On Tuesday, Florida's Supreme Court boosted the hopes of Democrat Al Gore by ruling that a hand recount of votes in three heavily Democratic counties could be included in the final tally.

Republican rival Bush has a slim 930-vote lead in official results which recounts could imperil. The outcome of the Florida vote is expected to determine who will be the 43rd president of the United States.
