Interesting, although I do believe that Dawkins is doing his own version of smoothing out the controversies......

The New Testament authors used the Septuagint, a Greek version of the Old Testament, rather than the Hebrew text. In this Greek version, the word "alma" was translated as "parthenos" a word that can mean either "virgin" or "young woman." (Think Parthenon, the Greek temple dedicated to the virgin goddess Athena.) So it was reasonable for these NT authors to understand it as "virgin" since that made more sense to them. English translations of Matthew 1:23 as "a virgin shall give birth" are accurate translations because Matthew was originally written in Greek and therefore used "parthenos." It is clear from the context that Matthew meant "virgin." And as any widely accepted Christian scholar will tell you, God wrote the Bible.
