The point you raise about teen-age kids who are chemically dependent is an excellent one. My wife worked for eight years as a teacher at a hospital for kids with drug/alcohol problems. Most of her charges were 14-15-16 years old, but also a fair number 12 and 13 years old. Once she had an 8-year-old boy who was an alcoholic. Think on that for 30 seconds. An 8-year-old alcoholic. The kids came from every socio-economic level of life. If there was a constant it was that these kids lacked effective parenting.
