Front end typically refers to equips that make the chips through its many process steps. These are very clean processing equips.
i.e. AMAT, KLAC

Back end is typically dirtier and deals with the cutting up and packaging the chips. These machines are less clean as the numerous process steps were completed prior to dice and slice then out into plastic.

This helps to explain the "incorrect" votes for Buchanan in Florida. Looks like Democrats instructions to elderly voters were in error. Great story!
