Chris Matthews is a registered Democrat and worked for Tip O'Neill when he was speaker (possibly as his chief of staff).

Matthews takes great care to maintain objectivity and not show his political preference on HardBall. Only once have I seen him slip on his show, and that was a split second slip which occurred in the last two weeks (and not over Gore).

He has been very vocal about his total disgust with Clinton scandals and Clinton's character. While he has been less critical of Gore, he has continuously brought up the Budhist Temple fundraiser and voiced disbelief at Gore's ignorance of the fundraising.

I would not be surprised if he did not vote for Gore, but not sure he therefore voted for Bush. Matthews recently told a story of not wanting to vote for Frank Rizzo when he ran as a Democrat for mayor of Philadelphia. He was so frustrated trying to figure out how to split his vote, he finally pulled the Republican lever to get out of the voting booth.

When Matthews appears on another's program, i.e., Larry King Live, he speaks out politically, since he is there as a private person.

Needless to say, I am a big fan of his - and not a democrat.
