KLIC would be a poor fit. Novellus has close relationships with SpeedFam/IPEC (CMP) and Lam Research (oxide etch and post CMP clean) in order to provide their Damascus copper process, so a merger with any of these companies would seem to make sense. However, each one of these other companies have their own top and mid management who would just as soon go it alone if they possibly could, because it is in their own financial self interest to do so, plus the ego factor of running your very own company. The only way they could hook up is to convince enough of the top execs that they would not get canned and that the option gravy train would roll onward. They say that the poison pill provisions are in place to protect the shareholders, but they are really there to protect the top brass.
