Taking these issues into consideration, we estimate the D.O.M. needs to rack up 50 million items by New Year's to meet our $1-billion sales estimate. At last glance, the D.O.M. was at 10 million, or roughly 500,000 items sold per day. To get to that 50 million, Amazon would need to double daily volume! While this could be a reasonable expectation given that we are approaching the heaviest shopping period, we wonder if Amazon's current free shipping promotion has cannibalized December sales by attracting shoppers in November. "

I think the 50 million figure is a bit to high. My guess is that Amazon can reach sales of $1 billion with a D.O.M. of 40 million items shipped.

"Have you seen the Delight-O-Meter on the Amazon.com home page? A
real-time record of the number of product units sold worldwide. Refresh the
page after a few seconds and the total has increased by several hundred.
Impressive stuff. It's interesting to think of the ramifications if this became
more common. Instead of waiting for three or six monthly trading
statements from companies, the figures could be viewed real-time on a web
page. The game of stock analysis could change quite a bit. Analysts at
investment bank Robertson Stephens have calculated that the
Delight-O-Meter has to total 32m units for November and December for
Amazon to meet the Q4 sales target of $1bn. That works out at roughly
640,000 units per day, 26,000 units per hour, 444 units per minute, 7 units
per second.
This week's advanced market strategy tip: keep hitting that
refresh page on Amazon.com, and if sales start slipping below a rate of 7
per second, short the stock."...
