Hi CB,

You've covered an impressive amount of ground in your latest post on the issue of race in the U.S.

One of the things that I am proud of an American is that people of talent can rise in either political party. The presence of Colin Powell and Condolezza Rice in GWB's transition team, and one suspects eventually, Cabinet, is very heartening.

I'm not sure I can match you eloquence and thoroughness on the matter at the moment. So let me just do my usual thing of throwing out half-baked ideas just to see in they land face up or down. I have a brother-in-law who is quite conservative and has been trying to get me to vote the Republican ticket for years. He's getting more persuasive as I mellow. On thing he suggested a couple of years ago to me was that we ought to change the voting laws so that only those who pay taxes, and no one who recieves a government check ought to be allowed to vote. Some days that sounds pretty good to me.

Like you, I have no patience for the chronic "I'm a victim" whining that unfortunately has taken root in this country. Not a path I think we should allow ourselves to go down.

Best, Ray
