Hi Scared but Hopeful; I'm just getting done reading Thomas Paine's Rights of Man (1792) which compares Monarchy with Republics, and no, you don't want to be ruled by kings and emperors...

But I have no doubt that there is going to be a lot of arguing about the various technologies after this. Essentially, what we have proved is that we are no better than our ancestors of the late 19th century, either in the technology for counting the vote, or in the morality for using political means to influence it. I already knew this, but it comes as a surprise to a lot of people. (G)

Hopefully it won't be as bad as the time the Republicans and the Democrats went to war with each other over the election of Abe Lincoln. The Democrats had a better army, but the Republicans had a larger population and after about 5 years of slaughter, wore the Democrats down. Nowadays, the Republicans would probably field better troops than the Democrats, and the population is evenly divided, so it probably wouldn't last so long. (G)
