Globalstar Clouds Qualcomm's Outlook

By Emily Burg

QUALCOMM (QCOM): A.G. Edwards & Sons lowered their rating on this provider of CDMA (code-division multiple access) wireless technology to ACCUMULATE/AGGRESSIVE from BUY/AGGRESSIVE on Nov. 14 citing price considerations. Although the firm says that the development of third-generation (3G) wireless represents an opportunity for QUALCOMM to increase revenue and earnings, it believes that potential is still a few years away. "We believe that long-term holders of QUALCOMM shares will ultimately be rewarded," the analysts write, "but the near-term issues temper our enthusiasm."

The biggest of those issues is the potential failure of GLOBALSTAR TELECOMMUNICATIONS (GSTRF), a wireless operator that provides worldwide service through its network of 48 low-earth-orbiting satellites. A.G. Edwards says that while GLOBALSTAR has enough cash to last until May 2001, its collapse could result in QUALCOMM taking charges and write-offs of around $700 million. Other near-term issues include South Korea's ban on handset subsidies and China's indecision on using CDMA technology. The firm's estimates for 2001, growth outlook and valuation all are predicated on the acceleration of 3G rollouts. The firm recommends caution about an entry point for a position in the shares. The firm cites the mid-$60 range as an ideal purchase point for the shares. Research on QUALCOMM was accessed 1,459 times and 57 new research reports were added to the Multex.com database from Nov. 6 to 12.

pcstel, thanks for the many links and your thoughts re: 3G. I still haven't quite decided what the apparent slowdown in 3G portends for Q*, or G* for that matter. I suppose for Q* it's a long term no brainer, but the near term concerns me. G* a lot tougher to call, but we'll get that answer pretty soon.

Happy Thanksgiving to the many who contribute to this thread. Looking for this virtual turkey to escape the banquet table and soar like an eagle.
