I think Sprint and VZ should bid like crazy to jack up the price of the spectrum and then withdraw from the upcoming auctions. This will force the desperate carriers such as Nextel and T to pay outrageous price for the 3G spectrums.

Ramsey, you crafty China man. LOL

Happy Thanks Giving:-)

Ramsey:

Is $500/pop a onetime figure? For what period is that $500/pop. Is it $500/pop per year or for 10 years or what? One cannot judge the true annual cost otherwise. You know how MSN and AOL are giving away $400 rebates for acquiring ISP customers for just two years. Amazon has a cost of $200-300 (I think) for acquiring a customer. If $500/pop is for 10 years, you are talking only $50/pop per year or about $4/month. My Baby Bell charges me more than that for voicemail on my homeline.

Just because radio, TV and wireless providers have got cheap spectrum right now does not mean that they cannot afford to pay more. And what are the spectrum costs as a proportion of the infrastructure costs for a 3G implementation?

Arun

>>UK and Germany took the lead and extorted over $500/pop for their licenses. We have to ask ourselves are the spectrums that much more valuable to the carriers? Months ago, I opined that these auctions are taxes in disguise and will kill progress. I think it is more true today than ever. >>

Ramsey, why call it extortion? If you sold land in a desirable location would you call it extortion? How about if the govt sold some and it fetched a high price? Unallocated radio spectrum is a public good. It can be given away: Lord Reith called television broadcasting licenses "licenses to print money."

Much better to allocate to those who plan to use it most effectively. Those who think they have more efficient plans are likely to offer more. That's the idea of an auction. If companies over-pay, then no big-deal, they go bankrupt, and the spectrum becomes available again.

It's odd that champions of free markets cling so stubbornly to subsidies. That would have been the result of anything other than an auction. This has been addressed several times before. To those who see any transfer as of money to government as A Bad Thing, then I suppose it's A Bad Thing. Can the rest of us get on with our lives now? This is off-topic.

Talking of getting on with life. I hope your TG is good Ramsey.

RS- I do not see watching TV on my wireless handset nor surfing the internet at
cable speed via wireless in at least 3+ years

1. How much will Sprint/Verizon charge for 1xor 1EV? You get more the same price. I mean if I'm going to have a moblie phone I might as well have one that I can at least connect ot my computer and have broadband and internet mobility all for the same price.

2. Have you seen the Sny 3-D glasses? I haven't actually tried them yet and they are $400 a pair but connected to a 1x or 1EV mobile handest the combiantion gives you not only TV/ Video/movies but also 3D. Wehaven't seen much use yet of 3D web cameras but we will. Why would you need more than the Sony glases and a QCOM euiped handset for all those uses. The futher adavantage is that QCOM is here and now and sois Sony all we need is for Sprint and Verizon to get the service up and running. Why they have to wait anotheryear is a total mystery to me.

Home cinema in full stero vision and stereo sound...hmmmm. Can't wait.

3. Autos and laptops. 1x and 1EV laptops are goig to be huge market. Why buy a laptop without a built in 1X o 1EV chip? SPs will love it so will the notebook makers not to mention all of us.

I think that 3G is in the US and Asia, Australia, Israel going to be a much bigger hit than 3G in Europe.

Best regards,

L
