Skeets, I'd seen the 11 votes thing reported before, it was what's-her-name that is the one who created the butterfly ballot they are using. The report I read had a quote from her that they wouldn't resort to a HAND recount unless it was "in the single digits." However, the thing that was missing from that report was how many votes were cast in that particular race. The implication is that that was her absolute rule for all time, when for all I know she just meant that race (which was very minor). Clearly, now the whole world knows how lame the punchcard ballots are.

BTW, I share your disgust at the intellectual dishonesty all around, from Bush, Gore, and down to their minions. I think the most honest people are the volunteers sweating out the long daze recounting. My sister used to work for one of the guys doing the recounts in Broward Co. who wrote her about it (which she forwarded to me). He was most appalled by the things Bush said about how corrupt they all were, which of course was a brain-dead thing to saw about any group subjected to that much non-stop quadruple-checking and scrutiny (they have to raise their hand and be personally monitored by an official even to get up and stretch!). But they are the pawns. But then I view the candidates as mostly pawns anyway, so I guess it all evens out.

I wish there were better prospects to look forward to in 4 years, but I really can't imagine that it will be any different -- it has become one, twisted, dysfunctional system, and the media, in my view, is right at the center of it.
