Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Msconfig.exe and double click on the file. It should open system configuration utility. Another way to get there is to go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information/tools menu/ sys config utility.

i went to ...start up/programs and have 11 shortcuts

go to start button/programs/startup folder and tell me what is in the slide out menu. Sounds like you just deleted your program file shortcuts. You can also try right-clicking the icons in your systray and seeing if somewhere within the choices is a way to remove the icon. There usually is.
