If Gore were a statesman, he would concede. I'm under no illusion, however, that he will do that anytime soon.

I agree with you on that point, Cheryl. I would not, however, call Dubya a statesman either. I think this process has shown quite clearly what kind of people we get to choose the "lesser of two evils" from, and it's a sad state of affairs. I think we're at the point where this clown show may well be emboldening the Saddam Husseins of the world; at minimum we're now a laughing stock (again...last time was the impeachment).

These turkeys do not in any sense represent opposing views on individual rights vs. government power. Either one of them would have had the same lawyers making the same arguments word for word if the situations were reversed; each one of them will go running to the Feds any time it suits them, and defend 'states rights' when it doesn't. It would be nice if we could learn this one most important lesson from this fiasco. But unfortunately it's likely to have the opposite effect. Instead of realizing that all we are is two gangs fighting over whether it's better to wear red or blue, and coming to our senses, everybody's going to keep assigning blame to the man in the mirror, and polarization over distinctions without differences will continue.

In any case, it looks like Dubya, the great bipartisan healer-of-rifts, the reacher-across-the-aisle, is going to get his chance.

Let's see what happens.

Dear Cheryl: As you know, I have upset some people on this thread over my comments regarding my extreme concern over the events that are transpiring down here in Fla. Here is an article written by Peggy Noonan that I believe accurately, elequently, and concisely describes the rumors and inuendo swirling around here from mouth to mouth but not being reported by the media. If you wish to know the truth and why I am so upset read it, if not skip it. JDN
