I plan to stop by my local BestBuy tonight on the way home
to do an informal survey of the flash card inventories.

I hope that SanDisk can "take flight" again once the holiday tallies are in...

A co-worker told me that one bonus of CompactFlash...

...in handheld devices is that programs are executable directly from the card. This is not possible with Memory Stick or Handspring flash memory modules. And since Palm doesn't support flash cards it simply isn't an option.

Does anybody know why this is the case?

Just looking for signs of CompactFlash/MMC's/SDMC's Market Penetration...

I saw on and advertisement for CDW, a B-to-B e-tailer, on CNN today that highlighted their relationship with Simple Technology. They mentioned the line of memory products they carry from Simple and then specifically mention their CompactFlash products. The camera then does a super-zoomed view of a CF card that takes up the whole screen. I thought that was exceptional.

Panasonic has also had a series of ads using a Jimmy Durante-like voice singing "Just a bit of magic is all you need..." One ad shows a digital camcorder that an old-timer takes bungee jumping. At the end he pulls out an SDMC and e-mails a still to his disbelieving grandchildren.

Last week I saw Mission Impossible II and they had a Kodak DC 290 featured plus the story line revolves around a slide show captured on a CompactFlash card. Kind of reminded me of my PowerPoint slide presentations I have done on CompactFlash.

Also recall that Barron's had a feature article on PDA's about a week ago and the Compaq iPaq, a PDA that uses CompaqFlash, was featured on the cover. I spoke with a Microsoft rep this weekend who said that iPaq is sold out until February of 2001 due to demand and a shortage of color LCD screens. He was demo'ing the Cassiopeia EM-500 and pulled out the MMC for me to see. It was a SanDisk card that holds 32MB. No card ships standard with this device. I predict that the next generation of Palm devices will create demand for MMC given the MMC/SDMC slot to be included.

Best,
