I thought up in Wisconsin life's a cheese sandwich and every day is another angioplasty. <g>

I have been remiss in my contributions here for awhile. I've written about each of my three kids here in the past, for days that were special for them, and for me.

This weekend was one of those times that was special because it wasn't special. It was just nice.

With the Christmas season in gear, our Decembers have a tendency to be hellish, filled with frenetic dashing to and fro to go to this event and that. By the end of the month, we are not ready to celebrate; we are trying to exhale.

But this weekend we managed not to fall into that trap. On Saturday we ran a couple of errands, shopped for maybe an hour or so, but then we came home early enough to build a fire in the fireplace, have some dinner together as a family, and watch some holiday videos while the fire blazed. The kids picked out one of my favorites, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, to cap off the evening. I mean of course the Boris Karloff classic version, not that new one which I haven't seen -- why remake a masterpiece?

At one point as my five year old son began to tire, I looked over and saw my oldest (almost nine) move up to hold him up and hug him next to the warmth of the fire, as they both watched the Grinch first steal the little Who's presents and then triumphantly return to the sounds of their singing.

Today we also spent some evening time in front of the fire, doing puzzles and relaxing. What was great about it was that it wasn't about an activity or a planned time, it was just time spent enjoying the season and its traditions and music.

The next three weeks will be busy. We will forget for awhile what the season is about in our rush to get everything "done". But I hope that more of our time is like this weekend was -- relaxed and together.
