A year ago, Intel's lead in mid-range and high end desktops was overwhelming.

These things can change.

Dan-

They haven't changed even in the last year in any sense meaningful to Intel. Revenues and earnings are up. Share price is up slightly, market share is about the same and margins are about the same. I don't see how Intel's fortunes have deteriorated.
Do you really expect the same kind of magic bullet in the SMP/laptop areas that Athlon was in the desktop?
