Re: "his totally unqualified widow": Many people would say that lack of direct political experience is an asset, not a liability, when seeking public office. Ross Perot garnered 23% of the popular vote in '92 by pointing out that he had no political experience. Whether or not a person is "qualified" or "unqualified" for senator is a determination that must be made by the people of Missouri, not by some elitist columnist like George Will. I believe Ashcroft quit campaigning for only a week after Mel's death. Then he hit the campaign trail in earnest. Mrs. Carnahan did little campaigning per se. She remained in the family home in Rolla, for the most part. The main reason Ashcroft lost was because many Repubs in Missouri were disappointed with his years in Congress. A good friend of mine, who is a big-shot Repub lawyer in mid-Missouri, said he did not vote for either candidate. He specifically said that Ashcroft had done little to bring federal money to Missouri, unlike his Republican counterpart, Sen. Kit Bond. The entire argument that Carnahan being 6 feet under and did not meet the residency requirement is ludicrous. I would love to see the Repubs challenge the legitimacy of the election. I would LOVE for this to happen. Overnight the Dems would pick up 8 points in the polls from angry women all across the country. One question for you: On what basis is Ashcroft entitled to the Senate seat he lost? The Repubs could argue (unsuccessfully) that no one should be entitled to the seat, but they certainly could not argue in any way, shape or form that Ashcroft is entitled to continue serving as senator.
