Buckwheat,

"My vendor friend also indicated that Duron sales were still slow. He did emphasize that Athlon sales had been blowing everything else completely away. If I get a chance to go over to Atlanta this week-end, I'll check with some of the other vendors on their sales."

Here is the processor top 10 bestseller list of November 24 of K&M Elektronik:

1 AMD ATHLON K7 900 Thunderbird
2 AMD DURON 700
3 AMD DURON 800
4 AMD K6-2 500
5 AMD ATHLON K7 800 Thunderbird
6 AMD ATHLON K7 1000 Thunderbird
7 AMD DURON 750
8 AMD ATHLON K7 700 Thunderbird
9 AMD ATHLON K7 750 SLOT-A
10 IBM/CYRIX 6x86 MX PR300 233 MHz

RE: I just spoke with one of my vendors in Atlanta. Follow-up....

Some more poop from some of the smaller shops (super screw-driver) in Atlanta.

Looks like on the average that the 1 Ghz AMD processor is the most popular followed by the 900 and 1.1 Ghz T-birds. 1.2s are near impossible to get. A couple of the vendors perceived that large OEMs had 1.2 inventory spoken for.

AMD is leading INTC in sales by a wide margin (60/40 or more)in these shops. The best selling Intel processors are the 600 to 800 mhz PIIIs. The celerons are not selling well (relatively) in these shops. Celeron and K6-2 sales are about the same but celeron availability (supply) is better.

Duron sales are picking up but are still slow. A couple of new boards are out that use the older AMD 751 chipset and on-board video, modem, and sound (not intergrated into the chipset). These boards sell for about a $100 and support the Thunderbirds. Did not ask about the name brands. Prob something very cheap like an AMP or PC Chips.

No P4s being sold in these shops yet. The word on the street is that the P4 is a poor performer and not worth the big bucks. One vendor commented that it would be interesting to see how long it took the P4 to dismiss the bad reputation to catch on (sales wise).

Most of the vendors reported that customers were "supersizing" (Tm MacDonalds) on system memory due to the recent price falls. I got no guesses on the direction of memory. Although high capacity drives are getting cheaper, the lower density/capacity drives continue to get harder to find.
