The need to upgrade goes beyond the CPU. New peripheral stimulate it as well.

My new two computers have a DVD/CDR 12X by Ricoh that is "guaranteed" coaster proof and a 75 GB hard drive (I had two before). Not to mention the GEForce video card.

Niceguy and RDM, Re: I'd have to think many who are upgrading now are looking in the 1 gig and up range...Tough not to be impressed with AMD's product line in this space on a price/performance basis...

Strange you should mention it, I just finished a little "upgrading" at my household yesterday morning, I built 5 TBird systems for my family for an early Christmas. I say "early" because I'm afraid it makes no sense to try to keep any of the recipients waiting.

I built one 800 MHz system and four 1 GHz systems, each with 256 MB of memory and each AMD processor mounted in an Asus A7V board. I used ATI Radeon cards (3-32 MB DDR and 2-64 MB DDR), the smallest hard drive was 15 GB and the largest holds two 30 GB drives. Two systems contain CD burners.

As has been my past experience with AMD Athlon processors, each machine has rock solid stability and each has blazing speed. Nothing flakey, nothing weird, just excellent performance and satisfaction. I'm proud to be a part owner of a company that produces such excellent products!

Kindest regards,
CrazyMan

P.S. This is the first SI message posted from my wife's new 1 gig Thunderbird, she formerly used a 200 MHz system and absolutely loves her new Athy. Did this message get to you all any faster??? :o)
