"But it's not democracy"

But we are not supposed to have democracy, just a republican form of government based on democratic ideals which also protect personal freedoms. Pure democracy doesnt protect individual rights. And the courts due become the ultimate arbiters of conflicts. In the end would it be the US Supreme Court who decided the election. Those folks certainly are not all democrats. If they back up Florida SC, election would have authenticity regardless of who wins Sunday count. And if they dont, Bush's election will have needed legitimacy and the Gore forces will have to stop.

**OT**<we are never going to know who Floridians really wanted for President.

I think that the problem began when the number of lawyers in this country exceeded the number of stop lights in the country. They both serve the same function. Both make you stop when you are in motion.

It used to be that everyone had a lawyer for a second cousin. But now they have become a piece of household furniture like a remote control that you can zap people with.

This is all a result of Americans watching too many episodes of Perry Mason. Like Marshall McCluen said, "television is nothing but bubblegum for the eyes". We should have gone to the library instead.

Both on topic and OT---

<<The U.S. is a Lawyerocracy, a lot like ancient theocracies. We have a class of shamans who speak a language no one else understands, and who have
become the final arbiter of all decisions. The Supreme Court is our Delphi.>>

Perhaps you're correct, but please offer a better alternative to law and lawyers to resolve conflicts. The legislature? riots? anarchy?

Less importantly, but more germane, I ask myself what the difference in AMAT is between now and when it was above 100? The only answers that I can determine is that techs have been hit because of wild overvaluation of many of the dot-coms, there is both tax-loss selling and mutuals' dumping, and the political mishagoss. AMAT has met or exceeded all-but-the-most optimistic expectations. Their guidance, which has been accurate in the past, continues to be positive.

Cerainly the zeitgeist regarding techs have changed and I don't expect rapid return to huge PE's, but AMAT, IM (biased)O, will recover significantly and more uses will drive the engine upward.
