I think it's because the L2's must maintain coherency, which greatly reduces their effectiveness in multiprocessor systems (for a given, single, thread). Any single threaded benchmark would perform better on an otherwise identical uniprocessor vs. multiprocessor system. Sledgehammer wouldn't suffer this performance hit if the L2 was shared between the two cores.
